SYL Battery bags contract for BESS project in California [free access]

September 22, 2021

US independent power producer (IPP) Broad Reach Power has placed an order for battery energy storage system (BESS) equipment with Chinese company SYL Battery for a grid-scale project in California. The company is purchasing 188 MWh of equipment from SYL for installation of the 25 MW/100 MWh Cascade BESS project in Stockton, California.

Cascade BESS is a front-of-the-meter project, which is expected to achieve commercial operation by the summer of 2022 to help mitigate capacity shortfalls in California. Cascade was selected by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) to provide resource adequacy under a 20-year agreement signed in 2017. Broad Reach acquired the project in November 2020 from Enel.

The latest deal with SYL is part of a master procurement agreement that will enable expedited procurement for a multi-year GWh project pipeline. Broad Reach Power has already ordered 47 MWh of equipment from SYL for another California BESS project – the 10 MW/40 MWh Sierra BESS in Jamestown.
