US government to roll out PROTECT Act 2019 for cyber security [free access]

The US government is considering bipartisan legislation to boost the defenses of the nation's power grid against cybersecurity threats. The Bill—Protecting Resources on the Electric Grid with Cybersecurity Technology Act, or PROTECT Act of 2019—would require the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to study how to encourage public utility investment in advanced cyber security technology, and utilities’ participation in cyber security threat information sharing programmes.

Brazilian state-owned Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES) or the National Bank for Economic and Social Development has granted a loan of BRL1.76 billion to Chimarrao Transmissora de Energia, a special purpose vehicle (SPE) formed by Cymi Construções e Participações—a member of the Spanish group ACS, and the equity investment fund Brasil Energia—a member of the Canadian group Brookfield, to connect wind projects in the country's south to the grid.
