Project Update

Yunnan-Guangdong EHV Project, China [free access]

July 1, 2010

Developer: China Southern Power Grid Company (CSPG)

Project detail and status: This is a 800 kV HVDC transmission project that will transport about 5,000 MW of power through a 1,418 km line from Yunnan in the south west to Guangdong province in southern China.

In October 2009, Siemens completed testing of the 800 kV transformer to be shipped to China for installation at the project site. Siemens will deliver 10 of the 800 kV HVDC transformers for this system. In addition, it will deliver 10 units with a DC insulation voltage of 600 kV. The entire project is scheduled for completion in mid-2010.

In December 2009, the CSPG put into operation the UHVDC line with nominal power of 2.5 GW.  This HVDC line will evacuate power generated by several hydro power plants in the remote Yunnan Province to the rapidly growing industrial region in the Pearl River delta in Guangdong Province and its megacities Guangzhou and Shenzhen.

In June 2010, CSPG doubled the power transmission capacity of its HVDC line to 5 GW. As a result of the capacity increase, CSPG’s transmission capacity from southwestern Chinese provinces to Guangdong has surpassed 25 GW.
