Australia’s Powerlink continues work on upgrade of Tarong substation [free access]

January 10, 2020

Queensland’s transmission system operator (TSO), Powerlink, is undertaking preliminary upgrade work on the 275/132/66 kV Tarong substation, worth AUD13 million. The substation is a major injection point in Powerlink’s transmission network, and connects the Tarong and Tarong North Power stations to the grid.

The driver for the upgrade works was the ageing infrastructure of the substation, which was 38 years old. New secondary system control panels are currently undergoing factory testing at Powerlink’s Virginia site. The removal and installation works at the substation are expected to commence in April 2020 and continue until late 2021.

The move comes in a bid to ensure continued reliable power supply to the South Burnett district of Queensland, Australia.
