ABB bags GIS supply contract from Austrian APG [free access]

September 18, 2019

Switzerland-based ABB has signed a five-year framework contract with the Austrian power grid operator, Austrian Power Grid AG (APG), for the supply of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) at an estimated cost of more than USD100 million.

Under the contract, ABB will supply GIS for the construction of a transmission grid, which will be designed to strengthen the infrastructure, so as to gradually incorporate renewable energy into the grid. The new transmission grid will link the wind power facilities located in eastern Austria with pumped storage power plants in western Austria.

Austria has set a target to source 100 per cent renewable energy to meet its electricity needs, as well as establish a carbon-free society by 2030 under its #mission2030 plan.

The latter plan will help the country in meeting the European Union’s renewable energy targets of 32 per cent by 2030 and 75 per cent by 2050.
