North Dakota PSC rejects 345 kV transmission project [free access]

June 18, 2019

The North Dakota Public Service Commission (PSC) has rejected a siting permit application for NextEra Energy Resources LLC's Burke Wind Project and an associated transmission line, citing concerns about wildlife.

NextEra Energy, through Burke Wind LLC, had proposed to construct the 198 MW wind farm on 22,933 acres in Burke County, North Dakota, along with a substation, a 37-mile (59.6-km), 345 kV transmission line and other associated facilities. The project is facing opposition from the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, as the area on which the project has been proposed is important to an uncommonly high number of wildlife species.

NextEra had entered into a 30-year power purchase agreement with Basin Electric Power Cooperative for the full output of the project.
