ABB bags HVDC order to reinforce power supply in Japan [free access]

April 25, 2019

Swizz-Swedish engineering firm ABB has bagged an order from the Japan’s Chubu Electric Power Company (Chubu EPCo) for the supply of two blocks each of 300 MW frequency converter systems associated with the Higashi Shimizu project in Japan. ABB has secured the contract through Hitachi ABB HVDC Technologies Limited, a joint venture between Hitachi Limited and ABB.

Under the contract, Hitachi will construct the systems using a combination of an ABB high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter along with a control and protection system, and Hitachi converter transformers.

ABB will supply its system engineering, voltage source converter (VSC) technology called HVDC Light, as well as the digital solution with the ABB Ability MACH control and protection system.

The Higashi-Shimizu project will help in augmenting the interconnection capacity between the 60 Hz area of Chubu EPCo and the 50 Hz area of Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) from the current 1,200 MW to 3,000 MW.
