Egyptian EETC awards CEEC USD206 million transmission project [free access]

January 9, 2019

Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) has awarded China Energy Engineering Group Corporation (CEEC) subsidiary Zhejiang Thermal Power Construction Company Limited, an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for a USD206 million transmission project.

CEEC will undertake the design, engineering, construction, supply, installation, and commissioning of 500/220 kV substations on a turnkey basis, in the country’s Kaft El Sheikh Governorate.

Currently, EETC and CEEC are hoping to raise project funding from various multilateral donor agencies. Of the total project cost, 70 per cent will be sourced from bank loans. EETC is in talks with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Deutsche Bank AG, who have previously financed similar projects in the country. Meanwhile, CEEC is negotiating with Chinese banks such as the Export-Import Bank of China (EIBC) and China Development Bank (CDB).

The contract also involves the supply of equipment such as distribution control equipment, cable couplers and power transformers, gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), combination switches, protection and telecommunication equipment, and some other electrical facilities. The equipment procurement process will begin once the project financing is finalised.

The construction period is scheduled within 15 months from signing the contract. Post the completion, these substations will become some of the largest substations supplying to the national grid.
