JICA extends loan for Cambodia’s grid expansion project [free access]

May 29, 2018

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has signed a loan agreement worth JPY9.22 billion with Cambodia's state-owned power company Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC) for the implementation of the Phnom Penh City Transmission and Distribution System Expansion Project (Phase 2) (II).

The project will increase the number of substations and expand the transmission and distribution network in Phnom Penh to stabilise the power supply in the metropolitan region. The loan funds will be allocated to public works required to construct the substations and expand the transmission and distribution system, for equipment procurement, and for consulting services (basic design work, detailed design work, bidding assistance and construction supervision).

It will alleviate the capacity inadequacy of substations that hinder the power supply, enable a stable supply of power over a wide area, and enhance the reliability of the transmission system, particularly in Phnom Penh.

The work on the project is expected to be completed by June 2021.
