Israel and Cyprus to discuss electric grid link [free access]

May 7, 2018

The European Union (EU) is seeking to have Israel linked into the European network through an underwater transmission line from the Hadera  power station in Isreal, to Cyprus and Greece.

Cyprus is an EU member state, but is not yet linked with the grid. Though efforts are now underway to complete the process. As reported, Israel and Cyprus are expected to discuss linking the two countries’ electricity grids as part of the EU programme to create a broad European-Asian electricity network.

The project is considered important to Israel as it would provide the country with an alternative source of power in the event the national electricity grid suffers a major technical problem or is overburdened.
