Australia NEM: Existing High Voltage Transmission Network [free access]

November 14, 2017

Currently, the power network of Australia’s NEM comprises 43,441 circuit km of transmission lines, with over 60 per cent of the network located in Queensland and NSW. Powerlink, which operates, develops and maintains Queensland’s high voltage electricity transmission network, owns the majority of the NEM network with 14,756 circuit km of line length. As of June 2016, the utility held an asset base of about AUD6,571 million.

TransGrid, the operator of NSW’s high voltage grid, owns 13,039 circuit km of line length. AusNet Services manages the 6,559 circuit km of transmission network in Victoria. ElectraNet handles the 5,524 circuit km of transmission network in South Australia. TasNetworks is responsible for providing a reliable transmission network in Tasmania, which presently comprises 3,564 circuit km of transmission lines.

Eastern and southern Australia is fully interconnected via three links aggregating 681 km, linking Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. NEM, the Australian wholesale electricity market, is functional in these synchronously interconnected regions.
